Live online Β· weekday evenings, Eastern time

Online chess classes for kids in New York

Many of our families are in New York. Classes are live online, so your child learns from home after school, Eastern time, without the trip across the city to a club: small level-matched groups or 1:1.

    When

Weekday evenings between 5 and 10 pm Eastern, at a regular slot that fits school and homework.

    How

Live on Zoom with a Lichess board: your child plays and solves during the lesson, not just watches.

    Cost

Small groups (4–6 kids) from $59 a month for 4–5 classes; 1:1 coaching from $99. The trial is free.

From online games to New York tournaments

    Scholastic chess in New York

New York has a busy scholastic calendar, from school clubs to state championships organised by the New York State Scholastic Chess Association (NYSSCA). Rated events run under US Chess rules, so your child needs a US Chess membership to play them.

    What we prepare

We get children ready for their first rated games: the US Chess rules that catch first-timers, the openings they will meet over the board, and how to use their time.

Before a first event, read what changes at your child's first rated tournament and what counts as a good US Chess rating.

    Who teaches

Bhaskar Gupta, LWSed's founder and head coach, holds a FIDE rating and teaches every chess class himself. Our students also get a free online tournament or chess event every weekend, and our monthly Lichess tournament has run 85 events so far, every result public in the Hall of Fame.

    Questions New York parents ask

Do you have a studio in New York City?

No. All classes are live online on Zoom with a Lichess board, so families anywhere in the state can join.

What times work for New York families?

Weekday evenings between 5 and 10 pm Eastern, at a regular slot we agree after the trial.

Is a group or 1:1 better for my child?

For most children under 10, a small level-matched group works well and costs less. 1:1 suits children chasing a rating goal or preparing for a specific event.

Can my child play tournaments with you?

Yes: our free monthly online tournament on Lichess, with certificates and a public Hall of Fame. For rated over-the-board events we help you prepare.
