Live online Β· weekday evenings, Eastern time

Online chess classes for kids in New Jersey

Many of our families are in New Jersey. Classes are live online, so there's no driving to a club after school: your child learns from home in the evening, Eastern time, in a small level-matched group or 1:1.

    When

Weekday evenings between 5 and 10 pm Eastern, at a regular slot that fits school and homework.

    How

Live on Zoom with a Lichess board: your child plays and solves during the lesson, not just watches.

    Cost

Small groups (4–6 kids) from $59 a month for 4–5 classes; 1:1 coaching from $99. The trial is free.

From online games to New Jersey tournaments

    Scholastic chess in New Jersey

Rated scholastic events in New Jersey run under US Chess rules, and the state's US Chess affiliate is the New Jersey State Chess Federation (NJSCF). Your child needs a US Chess membership to play rated games.

    What we prepare

Before a first event we cover the rules that catch first-timers (touch-move, writing the moves down, the clock), the openings children meet over the board, and how to spend the time on the clock.

Before a first event, read what changes at your child's first rated tournament and what counts as a good US Chess rating.

    Who teaches

Bhaskar Gupta, LWSed's founder and head coach, holds a FIDE rating and teaches every chess class himself. Our students also get a free online tournament or chess event every weekend, and our monthly Lichess tournament has run 85 events so far, every result public in the Hall of Fame.

    Questions New Jersey parents ask

Do you teach in person in New Jersey?

No. All classes are live online on Zoom with a Lichess board. That's how we can offer evening slots without the drive.

What times work for New Jersey families?

Weekday evenings between 5 and 10 pm Eastern. We agree a regular slot with you after the trial.

Can you prepare my child for a US Chess tournament?

Yes. Our tournament prep uses US Chess rules for US Chess events and covers the openings, the clock and what to expect on the day.

    What age do you start?

Most of our students are 5 to 12. The trial shows us where to start, whatever the age.
